What is stopping you from writing an ebook? What is your excuse for not writing an ebook? Mine used to be that I was tired and just could not focus on the topic I was writing about. If you are like most beginner ebook writers, you are encountering some issues creating your first ebook.
Since struggling to write that first ebook, I have written 40-plus more over the past five years. Yes, that is a lot of ebooks and I did it because I avoided excuses, put my head down and just wrote.
I wanted to share with you some of the most common excuses people have shared with me as the reason they could not write an ebook and how we overcame them to put them on the right path toward becoming a published author.
Work
Practically every ebook author had a job when they wrote their first ebook. Several successful authors still have a full-time job because they find that they like cashing a paycheck and making money passively every month.
You must not use your work or long hours as an excuse because no matter how busy you are at work, you can always find some extra time during the day to write. I am not advocating that you write while you are supposed to be writing. However, if you take lunch at your desk or come in extra early or leave the office on time, you can find an hour a day to write.
If you focus, you can be done writing your first draft in as little as 12 hours of writing if you know your subject well and follow the strategies I outline in some of my other articles on my web-site.
Too Tired
It can be difficult to come home after a long day of work, hang out with your spouse, family or friends and then spend a few hours working on your ebook. That's exhausting, I know because I would come home after a 10 to 14 hour day, have dinner and head to my office to write for a few hours...every night.
It was tough, I was exhausted, but I drank a lot of coffee and tea and powered through it. I rested and found more time to write on the weekends.
No Time
Speaking of hours, this one is probably one of the main excuses I hear from readers of my ebook writing newsletter. When someone writes me and says they just cannot seem to find the time to write, I ask them the magic question - How much TV do you watch a day?
If they say they are not big TV watchers, I ask how much time they spend on the internet every day. You know where I am going with this, right? We waste time every day, sometimes hours a day. That time could be better spent writing instead of being wasted.
No Time
I know, I just covered this, but it deserves to be repeated. If you think you do not have time to write, carry around an index card with you and write down what you're doing every half hour.
Yes, a little extreme, but you only have to do it for a day or two. You will be surprised to find out how much time can be wasted when you are not aware of the "time sucks" that steal our time throughout the day.
Nothing to Write About
Plain BS. That is what this excuse is, plain and simple (and you probably know that already). Everyone and I mean everyone has something to write about. It could be about your hobby or something you have overcome.
There are ebooks on natural arthritis cures, balancing your budget, picking up men, picking up women, how to sell more stuff online, how to open an eBay business and the list goes on and on.
So decide what you are passionate about and like talking about and write about that. If you are worried that no one will be interested in that topic, just head over to Google and type in "[your topic] ebook" and you will see that there is a market for what you want to write about.
And do not worry if there are a lot of people who have written ebooks about your topic. There are a lot of people who write books about relationships, getting rich, losing weight and every year tons more come out. Your job is to write the best ebook possible on the subject and add your personality to the ebook.
I am Not an Expert
Who cares if you are not an expert in the traditional sense. Do this little exercise and I will show you that you can be an expert in a niche and that someone will pay you for that information.
Close your eyes and name one thing that you either love to do or know a lot about, something you are so passionate about you would do it if you got paid for it or not. Okay, now open your eyes. Do you think you know a little more than say 95 percent of the people in your market about that subject?
The point is that you know more about that one topic than someone who is just getting into that hobby or trying to learn how to crochet or raise great kids or whatever your topic is.
Now if you truly do not know anything about the topic, then head over to Amazon and buy the top three books on that topic. Read them, summarize them on one sheet of paper each and now you know more than 99 percent of the people.
Children and Family
Raising kids is a wonderful thing, but it should not be an excuse for why you cannot write. Stephen King was working two jobs and he would come home and sit in a tiny, cramped laundry room and write on a typewriter.
Sure his wife helped out with the kids, but the point is that he made the time to write. He spent time with the kids and had took vacations, but one thing he always made sure he did every day - write.
Sometimes our spouses will make it hard for us to find the time to write. They, rightfully so, want to spend time with us after work or want to go out to dinner and do things - shocking, I know!
What I like to tell my readers is that the best thing they can do is create a writing schedule and discuss it with their spouse or family members. Explain to them why it is important for you to write and that you are committed to creating your own ebook.
Write When You Are Supposed to Write
Now that you have a writing schedule, stick to it. This time is your precious time to get your first draft done. All you need is an hour a day for 7 to 12 days, so take a moment right now to map out when you will write every day.
Morning works best for me because I am at my most creative and it is before I am bombarded with other work. Plus, the benefit is that I get my writing out of the way and I can get work done and have fun without worrying about getting my pages for the day written.
Now all you have left to do is write your ebook because you have no more excuses. Get to it because the longer you wait, the harder it is going to be to get started on building your ebook publishing empire!
